Bolton Woning
The Bolton Woning is a customisable dwelling, designed to allow the end user to adapt the design and architecture to their preference. We were commissioned to create a playful maquette for the Woning Concept Dag 2026, where visitors could demount, play and change the model to their preferred choices. Although the house is designed within a fixed framework, the options are interchangeable around a central core and allow the architecture to respond to the needs of each buyer. Technical drawings and images can sometimes be difficult to read and understand. By presenting these possibilities as a physical model, visitors can see, touch and experience their potential home in three dimensions, making the creative process intuitive and enjoyable.

All customisations were made to scale and organised on a base plate as a three-dimensional catalogue. Visitors could pick up, touch and peek at the different options, interacting directly with the entire structure. We developed a click-in system in which all the components fit together securely while remaining easy to separate and exchange.
This system allows variations in wall types, roofs, bay windows and even interior partitions to slide in and out, creating different combinations, including unique possibilities that may never have been built before. This is precisely the level of creativity Bolton was looking for and reflects how we see models. Not only as tools for presenting architecture, but as investigative tools for exploring architectural development.
